This morning, H.M. The Queen Mathilde of Belgium and H.M. The Queen Maxima of the Netherlands visited the renovated terminal of the train station Utrecht Centraal. The visit happened in the context of the Belgian state visit to the Netherlands. It served as the perfect prelude to the official, celebratory opening of Utrecht Centraal on Wednesday, December 7th.
The station Utrecht Centraal is the busiest rail hub in the Netherlands. Prorail commissioned not only the refurbishment of some parts, but also the new construction of other parts of the terminal to BESIX Nederland. The terminal welcomes 100 million travellers a year. BESIX Nederland started the works for the new terminal, complete with a new esplanade in 2010. During the works, the train station remained operational at all times, which brought logistical challenges for the BESIX Nederland team, who had to work keeping in mind the 230.000 commuters passing through the terminal on a daily basis. The new train station was delivered on November 18th.
