Projects with a CO₂-related award advantage

A16 Motorway De Groene Boog (The Netherlands)

In Rotterdam-North, as part of the De Groene Boog consortium, BESIX is participating in the construction of the A16, a new motorway with a 100% energy-neutral tunnel. This sustainable and innovative motorway fits perfectly into its surroundings and will significantly improve access to Rotterdam.

Execution period: 2019 - 2024 (maintenance until 2044)
Client: Rijkswaterstaat

Bediencentrale Den Haag (The Netherlands)

The project, located in Scheveningen, covers the design, construction and maintenance for 15 years of the control centre in the Hague. The Hague Control Centre is the control room for the operations of the Hubertustunnel, the Koningstunnel, the Victory Boogie Woogie tunnel, three movable bridges and for the guidance of maritime traffic. The project will be carried out by the BESIX-Vialis joint venture.

Client: City of The Hague

Execution Period: 2021-2024

Knooppunt De Nieuwe Meer

The Reconstruction of the De Nieuwe Meer intersection will improve traffic flow and traffic safety in this busy metropolitan area.
The intersection and part of the A10 South motorway from the De Nieuwe Meer intersection to the Amstelveenseweg intersection will be completely reconstructed over a length of approximately two kilometres.

In the chosen solution, the traffic on the intersection and the A10 south motorway will be separated by creating a main and a parallel structure on the A10. This main and parallel structure of the A10 south will later link up with the main and parallel structure of the Zuidasdok Tunnel project.

This will be achieved by building four new movable bridges over the Schinkel river, widening the A10 to provide space for the main and parallel structure and the adaptation of the underlying road network, including the reconstruction of the Amstelveenseweg road.

The project will be realized by the TriAX consortium consisting of BESIX, Dura Vermeer and Heijmans.
Preparatory works have started in the first quarter of 2023. The effective start of work is scheduled for Q3-2024.

Execution period: 2023-2031

Ghent ring road R4WO (Belgium)

The DBFM infrastructure project R4WO aims to convert the existing R4 West and East into primary roads in Ghent, Evergem, Zelzate and Wachtebeke with the objective to make the R4 a lot safer, the residential areas along it more livable, and to create both along the R4 West and the R4 East more than 12 kilometres conflict-free bicycle lanes.

The status of preferred bidder has been awarded to the consortium BRAVO-4 consisting of BESIX Group, Stadsbader, EPICo, Rebel and I4B – The Belgian Infrastructure Fund, while each of the execution disciplines involves an entity of both BESIX Group and Stadsbader. BESIX and Stadsbader oversee the civil works, BESIX Infra and Stadsbader lead the road works, while BESIX Unitec, Deckx EM  (Stadsbader) and Jacobs are in charge of electromechanical works.

As per contract requirement, each company of the EPC as MTC has to obtain a level 5 CO2 performance ladder certification no later than one year after contract close.

VOVK

The project concerns a 4-year framework agreement for the preparation and execution of variable maintenance works for the South Netherlands road infrastructure system, consisting of a network of national highways including fixed bridges. Three lots are distinguished:

  • Lot West; containing the national highways A4, A16, A17, A27, A29, A58, A59 and A65/N65;

  • Lot Central; with the national highways A2, A50, A58, A59, A67, A73, A77 and A65/N65;

  • Lot South-East; With the national highways A2, A67, A73, A74, A76 and A79.

The project is realised by the JV BESIX-BESIX Infra Nederland.

A27 North (Houten - Everdingen)

Het consortium De Groene Waarden (BESIX, Mobilis, Mourik and Van Gelder) has been awarded the contract for the A27 North (Houten - Everdingen).

The A27HHN covers the 7 kilometres from the Houten junction to the Everdingen interchange.
The A27 from Houten to Everdingen will be widened to four lanes plus an emergency lane. Between Everdingen and Houten, 2 lanes will remain; the emergency lane will be (partly) renewed.

Between Houten and Everdingen, the A27 crosses two busy waterways: the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal and the Lek. The existing Houtse bridge over the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal will be widened on the western side with one lane and an emergency lane. The existing Hagestein bridge over the Lek will be replaced by two new bridges. The new western bridge will have a two-way bike path.

Execution period: 2025-2031

Client:  Rijkswaterstaat Grote Projecten en Onderhoud

Besides projects with a CO2-related award advantage, BESIX is also involved in projects where the CO2 Performance ladder is applied on its own initiative or where a CO2 Performance ladder certification on company level was requested by the client to be achieved during the course of the project.

Scheldt tunnel – Oosterweel

The project consists of the construction of the Scheldt tunnel which is the most important connecting element in the Oosterweel link and closes the Antwerp Ring Road on the north side. The tunnel has a total length of 1,800 m and will be built according to the ‘immersed tube’ method. Eight tunnel elements of approximately 60,000 tonnes each will be built in the inner port of Zeebrugge and then towed to Antwerp via the North Sea and the Western Scheldt, where they will be immersed in a pre-dredged trench in the River Scheldt. This technique, in which gravity and the upward force of water are constantly competing with each other, is one of the most ingenious building methods in concrete and hydraulic construction.

The project is being realised by TM COTU consisting of BESIX, DEME Infra, Dredging International, Jan De Nul and Stadsbader Contractors.  TM COTU itself chose to apply the CO2 performance ladder to the project.

Right Bank Oosterweel (Belgium)

The partial project ‘Right Bank of Oosterweel link’ connects, through the Oosterweel node, the Scheldt tunnel and the ring road R1, both in a northerly and easterly direction (Antwerp, Belgium). The R1 will be deepened over its entire length and partially covered, so that the Merksem viaduct will disappear and the urban landscape will undergo a thorough transformation towards a contemporary green and socially friendly environment. In order to achieve this in the shortest possible time, it is necessary to temporarily construct a new R1 to the east of the existing R1.

The partial project ‘Right Bank of Oosterweel link’ has a scope and complexity that is unprecedented in Flanders and will be realized by TM ROCO (the Belgian construction companies BESIX, DEME, Jan De Nul, Cordeel, Denys, Franki Construct, Willemen Infra, Van Laere and BAM-Contractors).
