At BESIX Group, we are driven by our mission of "creating sustainable solutions for a better world." We integrate Sustainability & ESG into every part of our processes, ensuring that sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Our sustainability strategy is built on four core commitments and eight strategic pillars.
Paving the path to sustainability
In 2023, BESIX focused on aligning its sustainability and ESG priorities with the interests of its key stakeholders. To guide this alignment, we conducted our first comprehensive "Double Materiality Assessment" (DMA) to identify critical ESG risks and opportunities. The assessment looked at two key factors:
Impact Materiality: How BESIX's activities influence the environment and society, both positively and negatively.
Financial Materiality: How ESG factors affect BESIX’s financial health, considering the risks and opportunities linked to our ESG performance.
The DMA encompassed the full scope of BESIX Group’s operations, including Construction, Infrastructure, Real Estate, and BESIX Invest, covering every stage of the value chain—from sourcing materials to the construction and maintenance of buildings and infrastructure.
To ensure a comprehensive understanding, the DMA included an employee survey and interviews with key internal and external stakeholders, allowing us to gather a broad range of perspectives.
Double Materiality Assessment
The insights from our Double Materiality Assessment and ongoing stakeholder engagement shape BESIX’s ESG strategy. We embed sustainability into our business, aligning long-term priorities with governance best practices.
We are committed to driving meaningful change through our sustainability objectives and actions, guided by three powerful global frameworks:
We actively integrate the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact into our operations, focusing on human rights, labour, the environment, and anti-corruption. This framework strengthens our commitment to responsible business practices and creating a positive societal impact. We’ve been a proud member of the United Nations Global Compact since 2016.
The SDGs provide a global roadmap to tackle the world’s most pressing sustainability challenges. Since 2017, we have aligned our strategies with these goals, focusing on areas where we can have the greatest impact.
As a signatory of this charter, we collaborate with fellow Belgian companies and organizations to accelerate progress towards the SDGs, both in Belgium and globally. The Belgian SDG Charter focuses on the 5 ‘Ps’ of the SDGs:
People,
Planet,
Profit,
Peace,
and Partnerships.
