The Grand Egyptian Museum’s main exhibition galleries are now open to the public

BESIX and joint venture partner Orascom Construction are extremely proud to witness the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum’s main exhibition galleries of around 13,000 m². This marks another satisfying milestone for BESIX, our partner Orascom Construction and our client, Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

Largest archeological museum and cultural hub in the world

The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) stands as the largest archaeological museum and cultural hub in the world, showcasing more than thousands of precious Egyptian ancient artefacts, built with the potential to exhibit even more artefacts in due time within the temporary exhibition that is yet to open to the visitors and other galleries within the GEM.

The GEM’s main galleries feature a remarkable collection that highlights individual masterpieces within a broader historical narrative for four different chronological periods of Egyptian civilization, allowing visitors to delve into Egypt’s rich history and heritage. Other notable attractions open to the visitors includes the world’s first suspended obelisk and the iconic Statue of King Ramses II, greeting the visitors at the entrance is of the courtyard, the Grand Stairs.

Long awaited galleries

BESIX remains excited to witness opening of other long awaited important galleries such as:

  • King Tutankhamun galleries that houses the full collection of over 5000 artefacts from King Tutankhamun tomb, including the world-renowned golden mask, exhibited for the first time at one single place.

  • Solar Boat Museum Building that houses the 4500-year-old Solar Boat that BESIX and Orascom Construction transported and placed inside its own separate building, simultaneously during its construction.

  • Microsoft Hololens augmented reality experience

  • Children’s Museum

Covering approximately 491,000 m² with a built-up area of 167,000 m², the GEM is situated near the Giza Plateau overlooking the last remaining ancient wonder of the world: the Great Pyramids of Giza.

In addition to the main galleries and grand stairs, visitors can enjoy other accessible spaces such as the outdoor gardens, vibrant commercial and retail spaces filled with restaurants, cafes, and shops, as well as a conference centre.
