The construction works on the 233-metre-long Toots Thielemans subway station, formerly known as 'Constitution', have started in 2020 and be completed by 2025. The renovation and expansion of the Lemonnier tram station will follow between 2025 and 2028. The passengers of the STIB, the client of this project, will enjoy greater comfort and a better connection between the centre, the north-east and south-west of Brussels. The Lemonnier station will also be accessible to people with reduced mobility.
Together with the STIB, the Brussels Region, the City of Brussels and the Township Gillis, S.M. Toots has developed a solid noise reduction plan. Vibrations and noise will be reduced, storage and working spaces will be limited and a roundabout will be built to divert traffic on the Inner Ring Road. This plan mainly takes account of local residents and shopkeepers. Some of them have been given temporarily relocated since September 2020, in order to preserve their activities and their accessibility.
S.M. Toots, in partnership with the STIB, will offer training courses and internships to people with disabilities and to underprivileged people throughout the project. The venture will also call on Brussels jobseekers to carry out specific tasks (exterior finishing, masonry, flooring, paintwork). The project will not only integrate a social dimension but also an environmental one. Indeed, the carbon footprint of the works will be controlled and reduced.
